Yes — a VPN hides your IP address. When you connect to a VPN, your internet traffic is routed through the VPN server before reaching its destination. Websites, apps, and services see the VPN server's IP address, not yours. That's the direct answer. But understanding what this actually protects — and what it doesn't — requires knowing a bit more about what an IP address is and how VPNs work at the network level.

What an IP Address Reveals

Every device connected to the internet has an IP address — a numerical label that identifies it on the network. Your IP address is assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and changes periodically for most home users (dynamic IP) or stays fixed (static IP for business connections).

When a website receives a request from your browser, it sees your IP address in the request headers. From your IP address, the website can determine:

  • Your ISP — the company that assigned your IP is publicly associated with that address range through WHOIS records.
  • Your general network type — residential, business, cellular carrier, or data center IP ranges are distinguishable.

Your ISP has more detail: they know which specific account is assigned which IP address at any given time, meaning they can link your IP address to your name, address, and complete browsing history.

Advertisers use IP addresses as one of many signals for cross-site tracking. Law enforcement obtains IP address records through subpoenas to ISPs. Websites use IP addresses to enforce geographic restrictions, rate limits, and account security checks. Knowing your IP address is foundational to many forms of online surveillance and tracking.

How a VPN Hides Your IP Address

What Your IP Address Is Hidden From

WebRTC Leaks

WebRTC is a browser technology that enables real-time communication features — video calls, voice chat, peer-to-peer file sharing. DNS Leaks

When you type a web address, your device sends a DNS query to translate the domain name into an IP address. If those DNS queries go to your ISP's DNS servers rather than through the VPN tunnel, your ISP can see which domains you're looking up — even if the actual traffic is encrypted through the VPN. This is a DNS leak.

VPN Kill Switch Failures

Does Hiding Your IP Address Make You Anonymous?

Hiding your IP address is a significant privacy improvement, but it doesn't make you fully anonymous online. Other tracking methods can still identify you:

  • Browser fingerprinting — your browser's unique combination of settings, fonts, screen resolution, timezone, and plugins creates a fingerprint that can identify you across sites without cookies or IP
